The Space Race was an informal competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, as each side tried to match or better the other's accomplishments in exploring outer space. It involved the efforts to explore outer space with artificial satellites, to send man into space, and to land him on the Moon. The Space Race effectively began after the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. The term originated as an analogy to the arms race. The Space Race became an important part of the cultural, technological, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Space technology became a particularly important arena in this conflict, because of both its potential military applications and the morale-boosting social benefits. From Wikipedia under the

From the Earth to the Moon is an excellent "documentary" on the whole space race. You should look at NASA's web site and they can give you some good references. There are some individual's books which give you perspective of the astronauts. Buzz Aldrin has one, Gene Cernan's is really good. There is a new one out by Neil Armstrong but I haven't read it yet. Hi, Without doubt, in my book, it the development of digital processing devices. Processors & associated memory devices etc. It has been estimated that my fine little dual core 130Gb box that I am typing this via, has more power that the whole of the Appolo missions put together Laptops are used extensively on shuttle missions, quite rightly Ok my microwave oven, washing machine, cooker etc all have a bit of a processor, but none of this would be possible, or affordable without the big pots of money put into the arms / space races I wasn't born until 1955, so a bit after the war, but I remember my Grandmother showing me how to work a mangle, and was very proud of having a monochrome TV with just the BBC on it.
