A space station is an artificial structure designed for humans to live and work in outer space for a period of time. To date, only low earth orbital (LEO) stations have been implemented, otherwise known as orbital stations. A space station is distinguished from other manned spacecraft by its lack of major propulsion or landing facilities—instead, other vehicles are used as transport to and from the station. Space stations are designed for medium-term living in orbit, for periods of weeks, months, or even years. The only space station currently in use is the International Space Station. Previous stations include the Almaz & Salyut series, Skylab and Mir. Space stations are used to study the effects of long-term space flight on the human body as well as to provide platforms for greater number and length of scientific studies than available on other space vehicles. Since the ill-fated flight of Soyuz 11 to Salyut 1, all manned spaceflight duration records have been set aboard space stations. The duration record for a single spaceflight is 437.7 days, set by Valeriy Polyakov aboard Mir from 1994 to 1995. As of 2009, three astronauts have completed single missions of over a year, all aboard Mir. From Wikipedia under the

Q. What happened to the space station Mir, and why and when did it happen? Asked by bernardoni@sbcglobal.net - Wed Mar 14 05:41:55 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Mir ( , which can mean both world and peace in Russian) was a Soviet (and later Russian) orbital station. It was humanity's first consistently inhabited long-term research station in space. Mir currently holds the record for longest continuous human presence in space at eight days short of 10 years. Through a number of collaborations, it was made internationally accessible to cosmonauts and astronauts of many different countries. Mir was assembled in orbit by successively connecting several modules, each launched separately from February 19, 1986 to 1996. The station existed until March 23, 2001, at which point it was deliberately de-orbited, and broke apart during atmospheric re-entry. I've heard that germs or viruses in a sterile environment like on a space station or spaceship are very dangerous. I doubt that it is a very sterile environment Answered by zim_8 - Thu Apr 10 11:41:23 2008 Controlling energy transfer in a space station?
Q. I need to make a design for a space station's heating control system by keeping in heat, and keeping out radiation. I can't use systems already created like in the ISS, but they can be an "inspiration." I need some sort of insulation, and a way to keep heat and cool air in the space station. I thought of changing windows to 2 way mirrors to reflect heat on the outside of the station, but I need a specific material for that. Please help with suggestions! Asked by seacow776 - Sat Apr 12 22:11:26 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. An insulating foam and a radiation-reflecting material coating the outside? The windows could work well; it'd be worth the time trying to find a material (or a material combined with a coating or a film) that has such properties.
