Spaceflight is the use of space technology to achieve the flight of spacecraft into and through outer space. Spaceflight is used in space exploration, and also in commercial activities like space tourism and satellite telecommunications. Additional non-commercial uses of spaceflight include space observatories, reconnaissance satellites and other earth observation satellites. A spaceflight typically begins with a rocket launch, which provides the initial thrust to overcome the force of gravity and propels the spacecraft from the surface of the Earth. Once in space, the motion of a spacecraft -- both when unpropelled and when under propulsion -- is covered by the area of study called astrodynamics. Some spacecraft remain in space indefinitely, some disintegrate during atmospheric reentry, and others reach a planetary or lunar surface for landing or impact. From Wikipedia under the

Since the shuttles and rockets are launced from Kennedy Space Center, why does Nasa use Houston as its main center once missions are underway. Is it because Cape Canaveral is vulnerable to hurricanes? Asked by Steve - Fri Jan 12 00:06:18 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Because LBJ was from Texas and very powerful in the Congress when the location was picked. If you look you will find NASA space facilities and manufacturing companies are usually located in states that will make happy senators with important votes. While the launch site, if in the US has to be on the coast of Florida to get the greatest boost from the spin of the earth and to launch over water for safety, the command post can be anywhere as it works by radio links from stations around the world. Why did some NASA officials consider Scott Carpenter's Mercury spaceflight less than perfect? Did he mess up? Asked by tracyterry - Mon Jul 9 17:01:13 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Christopher Craft considered Scott a hotshot who was lucky... he never took the time to learn all the controls in the capsule, he never listened to flight controllers when they told him to lay off from manuevering so much, and he didn't listen when told about the re-entry procedure - with the result that he had overshot his re-entry by a couple of hundred miles. Craft (and Kranz) both considered him to be very good as a pilot, but as an astronaut, he was a dangerous guy. He had to use his re-entry attitude control fuel to orient the capsule for reentry, because he used all of the normal manuevering fuel. Craft told one of the higher-ups, "If he lives, I swear I'll kill him" during the flight. Answered by quantumclaustrophobe - Mon Jul 9 17:27:36 2007 How long will the gap between spaceflights be when the shuttle goes out of service in a couple of years?
Q. And when will Orion come into service? Thanks in advance. Asked by ANTHONY M - Sat Mar 15 09:26:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The first manned mission of the new CEV (Crew Exploration Vehicle) is the Orion 5 mission currently slated for September 2014. The last shuttle mission currently on NASA's schedule is set for March of 2010, meaning that there will be roughly a 4 year gap between the shuttle's retirement and Orion's first manned flight. As budget and scheduling stand now, there will be a new Orion launch every few months up until the attempted Lunar landing of Orion 13 in June of 2019. A tentative Lunar mission has been scheduled for Orion 14 the following year. No further flight scheduling is available past that date. Of course all flight schedules are subject to change.
