An airline provides air transport services for passengers or freight, generally with a recognized operating certificate or license. Airlines lease or own their aircraft with which to supply these services and may form partnerships or alliances with other airlines for mutual benefit.

Airlines vary from those with a single airplane carrying mail or cargo, through full-service international airlines operating hundreds of airplanes. Airline services can be categorized as being intercontinental, intra continental, domestic, or international and may be operated as scheduled services or charters.

How come the airline that owned the plane that crashed in Buffalo hired sub-prime piolts?
Q. How come the airline that owned the Dash-8 that crashed on Buffalo hired sub-prime pilots? And do commuter airlines have to meet the same safety standards that major airlines have? Please let me know thank you.

A. Good question, but rather than jumping to uninformed conclusions, I would leave speculation about the hiring practices out of the mix till the NTSB issues their final report. The news media HAS been known to make a mistake then fan the flames, yes? Remember the Duke University LaCrosse team? The training required for airline pilots is specified in FAR 121, Supbart N. It makes no difference whether it is a commuter, a regional or a major. If it has more than 10 passenger seats, it's the same. How the company completes the required training is monitored by the FAA office responsible for the airline's operating certificate. The entire industry is interested to see what the NTSB determines to be the probable cause, at which time we… [cont.]

Will all this airline baloney make prices go up or down?
Q. I'm referring to the American Airlines cancellations and the recent bankruptcy of another airline or two in recent weeks. (ticket prices I mean) Gromit are you daft? I said the cancellations (due to safety inspections) and the bankruptcies (due to the cheap sniveling customers you refer to) were baloney. It is apparent that you have strong feelings on the matter but at least try to understand the question.

A. Reduced competition will never reduce prices. The unfortunate demise of several carriers in the last weeks does not bode well for anyone, including passengers. If the price of fuel continues to climb (almost an inevitability), we will probably see further shake-ups in the industry and either raised fares or surcharges on most flights.
