An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the term is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists. Until 2003, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military, or by civilian space agencies. However, with the sub-orbital flight of the privately-funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new category of astronaut was created: the commercial astronaut. From Wikipedia under the

I asked this question when I was younger and in school, but nobody ever gave me a clear answer. I am curious as to what happens when astronauts use the restroom in space and how that works. Asked by Angel - Thu Nov 1 13:41:30 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Diapers can provide a short term solution (a few hours), but a specially designed toilet is included in the space station and shuttle. The toilet basically uses air flow to repalce gravity. Waste is sucked down into the toilet. You can't store the waste on a vehicle that stays up as long as the space station does. Eventually, you have to dump it off the space station and it eventually reenters the Earth's atmosphere. Fortunately, the space station is travelling at over 17,000 mph, as is the waste dumped out of the space station. At that speed, human waste will quickly burn up in the atmosphere. A short radio piece from NPR on the subject is below. You are explaining to friends why astronauts feel weightless orbiting in the space shuttle, and they respond that they thought gravity was just a lot weaker up there. Convince them and yourself that it isn't so by calculating how much weaker gravity is at h = 590 km above the Earth's surface. Asked by Pablo - Sat Sep 27 18:42:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Q. I heard that mashed potatoes was first created for astronauts, and I need to know what other foods were also created. If you're wondering why I NEED to know, it's for a school thing. Asked by Marjorie W - Thu Jan 15 23:28:09 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Although you will probably get many answers to the contrary, there are actually no foods that were developed specifically for the space program. But it made for good PR in the 70's, so a lot of companies, like Tang, claimed to have been developed for the space program. It didn't take long for this urban myth to gain wide acceptance. In reality, none were.
