A city (from Latin civitātis), is a relatively large and permanent settlement, particularly a large urban settlement. Although there are no agreed on technical definitions distinguishing a city from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law — for example an article of incorporation approved by the local cognizant (state) legislature separates towns from city government forms, rights, duties and privileges in Massachusetts — similar distinctions are made across the world, particularly in former colonies of the United Kingdom. Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral; in later usages, especially in the United Kingdom and parts of Commonwealth of Nations, a city was a settlement with a royal charter.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation and more. This proximity greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process.

A big city, or metropolis, may have suburbs and regions. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban sprawl, creating large numbers of business commuters. Once a city sprawls far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

What steps should a city take to improve it's traffic condtions while greening the city?
Q. I'm writing an essay and I need some ideas of what a city can do to improve it's traffic conditions while greening the city. How can traffic be reduced and the needs of businesses and homeowners still be met? What sacrifices should the city take?

A. As cities like Los Angeles have shown us, building more roads does not reduce traffic and only creates more pollution. So to help both of these situations, you have to take cars off the roads. People aren't generally keen on buses, but light rail has been very popular in many places such as Denver and Salt Lake City. But if you build it, will they come? People don't want to go a long way out of their way. If homes and/or business are numerous around the transit stations, people will be more likely to use the transit, or even walk/bike to the transit station. Parking meters and the like discourage people from driving their cars in certain areas. It's usually much less expensive to take public transit than to park your car in a lot or… [cont.]

What city is best to relocate to for a fresh college graduate?
Q. I recently graduated with my bachelor's degree, and I am looking for a fun, vibrant, and cultured city. Somewhere that I can start working and eventually go to graduate school. A busy and big city close to pretty scenery and things to do outdoors. Here are some that I am thinking: Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco. I'd like to know the pros and cons of each place, and what is the best one to move to? If none of those is there one that would be better for a college graduate to move to?

What city to relocate to for young creative professionals?
Q. We are in our late 20's, newly married, and looking for a city with opportunity, ethnic diversity, arts and an active music/nightlife scene, as well as access to outdoor activities.

A. A few places come to mind, based on my own experience and my kids'. Chicago is a wonderful city, with everything you're looking for. The cost of living is high and winters can be brutal, but you've got Lake Michigan, a lively arts scene, great restaurants, and friendly people. Next, I'd say Boulder, CO is a great choice. It's not really a big city but you can't beat the outdoor sporting opportunities, the climate, the scenery and the citizens. I can also highly recommend Seattle, a wonderful place -- and don't forget the other cities in that area like Bellingham, Tacoma, and the suburbs. Last. I'd recommend Cleveland. It has world class museums and of course the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Case-Western Reserve University's… [cont.]
