Nouncomputers
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous. The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile phone to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to stop a computer on my home LAN from accessing internet but allow access to other computers on LAN? Q. I use Windows filesharing and would like to stop one computer on my LAN from accessing anything but other computers on my local network- I do not want it to be able to access the internet. Can anyone recommend how to do this? I would like this to be something configured in Windows itself since I do not want all partitions on the computer to be unable to access the internet. Just one of them. Asked by dave - Sat Jun 27 20:35:26 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. As previous answers have mentioned, you could configure a firewall rule in your router to block that computer from getting to the Internet. If your router doesn't have that functionality, you could configure that computer with bogus / fictitious DNS addresses. Of course, I would suggest using private IP addresses for this. You could log in the computer as administrator to make those changes, and then the person could have a plain user account, and even if they knew what was going on, they couldn't make changes since it's just a user account. That computer would still be able to see the Windows network, because Windows uses netBIOS for that. Admin is connected directly to the internet, and this one uses a Linksys wireless connection. This computer has two printers connected to it that I would like to allow the Admin computer to share. How do I go about this? I would also like to set up the network to be able to share files and sync our calendars. Asked by kristamaranatha - Mon Jul 13 11:23:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Right click on the printer and and select share. You will need to put both pc's in the same workgroup and set your firewalls to allow print and file sharing. Q. Suppose you install a certain operating system that is designed for 32-bit computers in a computer that has a processor of 64 bits. Will the Operating System work anyway in that computer of 64-bit processor? I know that if you do it the other way round: installing an operating system designed for 64-bit computers in a 32-bit computer, it won't work. Asked by Le Han - Wed Aug 26 08:47:42 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Operating systems are designed to work on either set up. Whether it is an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit) OS. All in all there is no difference between the two set ups, only your CPU can be bottlenecked slightly, and you are limited to 3.5gb of RAM.
