The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing internal territory. It is an inland enclave in New South Wales, and regularly referred to as Australia's 'Bush Capital'.

The need for a National Territory was flagged by colonial delegates during the Federation conventions of the late 19th century. Section 125 of the Australian Constitution provided that following Federation in 1901, land would be ceded freely to the new Federal Government. The territory was transferred to the Commonwealth by the state of New South Wales in 1911, two years prior to the naming of Canberra as the National Capital in 1913.

The floral emblem of the ACT is the Royal Bluebell and the faunal emblem is the Gang-gang Cockatoo.

How come Ottawa doesn't have it's own capital district like most capital cities?
Q. This is something that I'm sorta curious about but not losing sleep over. Ottawa is a city in Ontario, not in its own district, such as Washington, DC or Mexico City, D.F. (Distrito Federal). I could presume that this is a Commonwealth theme, as Canada was a British possession. But I now realize that in another ex-U.K. possession, Australia, Canberra is in it's own district, nee ACT (Australian Capital Territory) I presume. Do u guys got some info?

A. Usually, a country creates a capital district because they do not want any particular state or province to have control over the capital city. One guess is that the Canadians didn't feel this was necessary and were not worried about it. Another possibility is that the city is actually older than the country. In the US's case, the government actually "created" Washington DC after it was already a country. For Canada, Ottawa was already a city in Ontario and was just chosen to be the capital. (Probably because it was halfway between Montreal and Toronto, the two largest cities.)

From the "YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME" Files?
Q. Do you think she should be awarded any money? IVF mother sues over twin birth A mother who gave birth to twins instead of a single baby after receiving IVF treatment has sued her doctor for the cost of bringing up the second child. The woman, who cannot be identified because of a court order, is seeking more than 400,000 Australian dollars to cover the expense of raising one child until age 21. Testifying in the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, the 40-year-old mother said she told her doctor, Robert Armellin, that she only wanted one child. But an embryologist under the doctor's supervision implanted two embryos in her uterus, resulting in the birth of non-identical twin girls.

A. I'd take one of the babies into another room, hand him to a nurse, and fire off a shot in the air, then come into the delivery room and be like "Hey! Problem solved! Just to see the look on her face.
