Interstellar space travel is unmanned or manned travel between stars. The concept of interstellar travel in starships is a staple in science fiction. Interstellar travel is tremendously more difficult than interplanetary travel. Intergalactic travel, the travel between different galaxies, is even more difficult.

Many scientific papers have been published about related concepts. Given sufficient travel time and engineering work, both unmanned and generational interstellar travel seem possible, though representing a very considerable technological and economic challenge unlikely to be met for some time, particularly for manned probes. NASA has been engaging in research into these topics for several years, and has accumulated a number of theoretical approaches.

Will the human race ever achieve interstellar travel?
Q. What theories exist about travelling beyond the speed of light? If we discovered an unlimited universal energy source large enough would this facilitate light speed transport?

A. Yes,we will. Probably not some undisovered energy source but an energy source we already have. Freeman Dyson and some other physicist back in the 1950's kicked around an idea that still might work. Using hydrogen bombs to propell a spaceship. While you cannot use this method to violate any laws of physics, going faster than light, you could still reach speeds that would slow time for the travelers on board said ship. Let's say for the sake of argument that you could go at half the speed of light or three fourths. Time would slow down for the space travlers enough that a trip to other star systems may only take five or ten years to them. While on Earth centuries may pass for the people left behind. There are other ways to accomplish… [cont.]

What is the possibility that mankind will attain interstellar travel, possibly travelling faster than light?
Q. When will this most likely happen? Where would the first place we would go? how would we even know those destinations still exist? How will it be possible to navigate through deep space? Will long range scanners be necessary?
Asked by afrprince77 - Fri Aug 18 02:47:17 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only way that man will achieve interstellar travel is if we are eventually able to prove the existence of wormholes and be able to control them, or to find some way to bend space time. FTL travel is impossible according to the GTR. There have been experiments in particle accelerators at CERN where scientist have accelerated particles to within 99.99% but no matter how much energy is fed in they cannot get the particle past the speed of light barrier. Even if it were possible would you want to do so since the idea of a particle attaining infinite mass could theoretically create a singularity?

Why is interstellar travel difficult?
Q. Why is interstellar travel difficult?

A. If you made a scale model with the distance from the earth to the sun scaled to be one inch, the distance to the *nearest* star other than the sun would be over 4 miles! Most of the stars we see at night (without a telescope) would be from 4 miles to over 1000 miles on this scale. So the basic problem with interstellar travel is that the distances are absolutely incredible. The farthest that a probe of ours has travelled is about 9 feel on this scale and it has taken 3 decades to do that.
