A federation (Latin: foedus, foederis, 'covenant'), also known as a federal state, is a type of sovereign state characterized by a union of partially self-governing states or regions united by a central (federal) government. In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states is typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision of the central government.

The form of government or constitutional structure found in a federation is known as federalism (see also federalism as a political philosophy). It can be considered the opposite of another system, the unitary state. The government of Germany with sixteen federated Länder is an example of a federation, whereas neighboring Austria and its Bundesländer was a unitary state with administrative divisions that became federated, and neighboring France by contrast has always been unitary.

Federations may be multi-ethnic, or cover a large area of territory, although neither is necessarily the case. Federations are most often founded on an original agreement between a number of sovereign states based on mutual concerns or interests. The initial agreements create a stability that encourages other common interests, brings the disparate territories closer, and gives them all even more common ground. At some time this is recognized and a movement is organized to merge more closely. Other times, especially when common cultural factors are at play such as ethnicity and language, some of these steps in this pattern are expedited and compressed.

The international council for federal countries, the Forum of Federations, is based in Ottawa, Ontario. It helps share best practices amongst countries with federal systems of government, and currently includes nine countries as partner governments.

what's the difference between Peta and World Wildlife Federation?
Q. I mainly Support World Wildlife Federation but I would like to know the difference between them instead of knowing they're similarities.

A. Peta is a whacko fringe group who are an embarrassment to anyone who call themselves environmentalists. The World Wildlife Federation is more respected and is more likely to do some good.

What was life like living in post-Federation, pre-war Australia (1900-1914)?
Q. For example (and these are what I need help with the most): - City and Country Life - Entertainment/Leisure Activities - Famous People of the 1900s (and some good information sites if necessary) Thanks! P.S. I have been doing my own research, I was just wondering if anyone else could help me at all. P.P.S. And yes, I do know that Federation was in 1901, but I'm ideally going from turn-of-the-century.

A. This is the immediate post Federation period of Australia history. In terms of the British Empire which still existed and which Australia was still part of - it was the Edwardian period. King Edward VII had taken over from his mother Queen Victoria. Appart from the larger cities of Sydney and Melbourne, Australia was mainly rural. It depended on exports of wool and wheat to Great Britain. Entertainment revolved around sport, Rugby League and Rugby Union and Cricket for the men and Tennis for both sexes and some swimming and Netball and Horseback riding for those fortunate enough to have a horse. For those living in the city there was some very occasional opera and ballet and other theatre. But these forms of entertainment were in… [cont.]
