Combat, or fighting, is purposeful violent conflict intended to establish dominance over the opposition.

The term combat (French for fight) typically refers to armed conflict between military forces in warfare, whereas the more general term "fighting" can refer to any violent conflict. Combat violence can be unilateral, whereas fighting implies at least a defensive reaction. However, the terms are often used synonymously along with the term "Battle Ready".

Combat may take place under a certain set of rules or be unregulated. Examples of rules include the Geneva Conventions (covering the treatment of soldiers in war), medieval Chivalry, and the Marquess of Queensberry rules (covering boxing).

Combat in warfare involves two or more opposing military organizations, usually fighting for nations at war (although guerrilla warfare and suppression of insurgencies can fall outside this definition). Warfare falls under the laws of war, which govern its purposes and conduct, and protect the rights of soldiers and non-combatants.

Combat may be armed (using weapons), or unarmed (not using weapons). Hand-to-hand combat (melee) is combat at very close range, feeling the opponent with the body (striking, kicking, strangling, etc.) and/or with a melee weapon (knives, swords, batons, etc.), as opposed to a ranged weapon.

Hand-to-hand combat can be further divided into three sections depending on the distance and positioning of the combatants:

What are the best foreign troops you have fought alongside and why?
Q. The world has become more international and very few wars are fought with just one nation. For example the Iraq War has troops from 49 countries and korean war had 22 nations. What are the best foreign troops you have fought alongside and why? Also what are the worst foreign troops and why?

A. During my tour in Iraq I interfaced with British, and Japanese troops. The British troops concerned me because of their 'I'm better than you' attitude and the fact that they routinely ignored graphical control measures on a map (such as sector boundaries). Their also had a tendency to ignore things we told them and forget that something that worked for them may not work for us who were in a completely different situation. I was _really_ impressed with the Japanese. Their staff work was outstanding and their convoys were executed with a precision that was amazing to observe. I did kind of feel sorry for the Japanese troops because they had an ROE that required them to break contact if they were attacked and only allowed them to… [cont.]

What if Harry had fought back during his time in the clearing?
Q. Voldemort was still using the Elder wand correct? Harry was still the master of it right? If harry had fought back during this time, would he have beat him and sent him back to vapor mode right there? Is it the fact Harry willingly accepted death, that the elder wand was able to cast on him?

A. This is a great question because it makes us further examine the mysteries of wand use, which is a subject that was only fully examined in this last book. On p. 743 (U.S. hardback), Harry lays out the theory: "Does the wand in your hand know its last master was Disarmed? Because if it does... I am the true master of the Elder Wand." In my opinion, the Elder Wand could only know that Draco was disarmed because Harry was currently holding and using Draco's old wand. Harry's mastery of the Elder Wand was only by proxy. Remember that the Elder Wand still worked like a regular wand for Voldemort. He complained to Snape that it just "refuses to perform as legend says it must perform for its rightful owner." The wand could still hurt and kill… [cont.]
