Answered by Frank N - Fri Feb 29 20:18:32 2008 Why does the mercury level of a thermometer momentarily go down when it is warmed? Q. When a mercury thermometer is warmed, the mercury level momentarily goes down before it rises. Can you give an explanation for this? Asked by a_distorted_realitys_big_nothing - Sat Aug 12 17:49:39 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. When heated not only does the mercury expand but so does its container which causes the inner vestibule of the container to enlarge making more room inside. Now here's your answer: The container, being on the outside, gets heated first and therefore expands first. The mercury has to catch up after the heat is equalized throughout the thermometer. Answered by dudezoid - Sat Aug 12 18:07:17 2006 How can you get rid of mercury and phosphorous?
Q. White phosphorous is made up of 4 atoms of tetrahedral; mercury is a heavy, silver-white, highly toxic metallic element, the only one that is liquid at room temperature; quicksilver: used in barometers, thermometers, pesticides. I need help! Any ideas? Asked by Josy - Fri Apr 4 12:29:10 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. For starters you could use alcohol in your thermometers. It expands less evenly than mercury but this can be solved by adjusting the scale. It also has the advantage of freezing at a lower temperature and so can be used to measure lower temperatures that a mercury thermometer. You could also use an electronic thermometer sensor which has the potential to be far more accurate. Phosphorous I would just burn. It ignites pretty easy, which is why its used at the end of matches to start them going. Again this could be replaced by a cigarette lighter which uses a flint and gas and probably a bit safer in terms of fire risk.
