New Orleans (pronounced /nuː ˈɔrliənz/ or /nuː ɔrˈliːnz/, locally [nuː ˈɔrlənz] or [ˈnɔrlənz]; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛl ɔʀleɑ̃] ( listen)) is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana.

The city is named after Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, Regent of France, and is well known for its distinct French architecture, as well as its cross cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" city in America.

New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, straddling the Mississippi River. The boundaries of the city and Orleans Parish are coterminous. The city and parish are bounded by the parishes of St. Tammany to the north, St. Bernard to the east, Plaquemines to the south) and Jefferson to the south and west. Lake Pontchartrain, part of which is included in the city limits, lies to the north and Lake Borgne lies to the east.

What could happen to New Orleans if areas to the north of it experienced heavy precipitation?
Q. Why would a city, such as New Orleans, at the mouth of the Mississippi River, be especially concerned with precipitation in other parts of the country? What could happen to New Orleans if areas to the north of it experienced heavy precipitation?

A. Assuming you are asking if heavy rains or other runoff would raise the level of the Mississippi River, that happens every year during Spring. It's why the river is lined with high levees - to prevent the overflowing river from flooding the areas around it. The "Great Flood of 1927" was the event that caused the construction of the modern levee system, though levees were built along the river since Europeans settled in Louisiana. note that the levees protecting New Orleans in 1927 were not breached by the high waters. Also note that the city is not at the mouth of the Mississippi. New Orleans is 90 miles from the mouth of the river.

What was the original way New Orleans was pronounced?
Q. I understand the locals normally say N'orlins - Stress on the Nor. I was just curious if there was an original French way in which Orleans may have been pronounced. Currently I say New Orlins - stress on the Or, but when I was young I would say New Orleens - stress on the leens.

A. Only Hollywood and tourists call the city N''Awlins. The original name of the city was in French: Nouvelle Orleans. It is pronounced new vell ore lay on. There are two "normal pronunciations today: New Or le ans (Orleans is 3 syllables) New Or leans (Orleans is 2 syllables) The issue is somewhat confused by the fact the City of New Orleans is also (same boundaries) Orleans Parish (parish = county). Everyone says Or leans Parish (Orleans with 2 syllables).

How hard is it to get into clubs in New Orleans?
Q. I am planning a birthday trip for me and 7 of my friends. I live in south louisiana (about two hours from new orleans) and we are going to NOLA for my 18th birthday. I was just wondering if its hard to get into clubs down there when you are 18, because I know a lot of place are like 21+.

A. You can get into tons of places at 18, especially if you're female. A lot of bars and clubs admit ladies at 18 and men at 21. Try the Republic on Friday nights if you're into 80s music (trust me, it's an awesome night, and I was never one to like 80s music). You can always wander through Bourbon. Other clubs include Ampersand, Voila, Le Phare, Metro...check the age for the specific night you want to go, though.
