A soldier is a member of the land component of national armed forces; whereas a soldier hired for service in a foreign army would be termed a mercenary. In most languages, "soldier" includes commissioned and non-commissioned officers in national land forces.

Occupational designations

In most armed forces the word soldier has been mostly abandoned, due to the increasing specialization of military occupations that require different areas of knowledge and skill-sets. As a result, "soldier" has been replaced by names which reflect an individual's military occupation specialty Arm, Service or Branch of military employment, their type of unit, or operational employment or technical use such as: trooper, tanker, Commando, dragoon, infantryman, marine, paratrooper, ranger, sniper, engineer, sapper, or a gunner.

What specific war and battle left American soldiers to freeze to death?
Q. I believe American soldiers invaded Moscow, and instead of Russian troops fighting, they waited for all of the soldiers to freeze. And it ended up working for the battle.

A. I don't know what kinda of alternate history your talking about, but the US has never invaded Russia, ever!!! The coldest climate we ever sent troops to during a war would be in World War 2 in either the battle of the bugle or when the US fought the japanese in the aleutian islands in Alaska (one campaign not many know, but we did fight japs on american soil, go look it up, its very interesting). Some US soldier did freeze to death during those battles, other than that i don't know of any other war were soldier died mainly because of freezing.

Q. What happened to the soldiers after they were found not guilty? Were they at Lexington? Concord? Bunker Hill? Did they survive the Revolution?

A. You know wiki can be a wonderful place. Boston Massacre In 1768 the 29th along with the 14th Regiment of Foot were sent to Boston, Massachusetts, where on the evening of March 5, 1770, men of the 29th Grenadier Company under the command of Captain Thomas Preston took part in the Boston Massacre in which five colonists died during a riot in front of the Boston customs house. Due to the incident, the regiment earned the nickname the Vein Openers for drawing first blood in the American Revolution. The men involved were tried for murder and were defended by John Adams (who later became President of the United States). Two of the men involved Hugh Montgomery and Matthew Killroy were found guilty of manslaughter and branded on the thumb. The… [cont.]

What was it like for the soldiers on the battle field during the American civil war?
Q. Can you tell me about one main battle? Were there trenches dug? What weapons did they use? What happen with injured soldiers on the battle field? What were the tactics used on the field?

A. What was it like on a battlefield? Confusing, terrifying, chaotic, bloody, emotionally trying to say the least. Imagine walking elbow to elbow toward a line of breastworks, ordered not to fire, being fired at by artillery and infantry. Men going down next to you, in front of you, all around. Sometimes just shot through, other times blown to pieces. Maybe even your brother or neighbor from home (remember, regiments were raised locally) getting injured or killed, yet you can't stop to help or to grieve. You close ranks to fill the hole and keep going. Or imagine being behind the breastworks with that same line of battle approaching you. No matter how much fire you pour into them, no matter how many rounds of shot and canister… [cont.]
